Ukraine December 2009

Hi Everybody,

This is my second year in Ukraine.I really started to like this country but nowadays there is a big crisis here. The Uranian Grivna is decraising against usd everyday. Today 1 usd= 10 hrv !!!

May be this is not meaning anything for anyone but 1 usd was 5 hrv 2 months ago :)  so usd is 2 times increased here, so what if you are making business with other countries and supplying in dollars you are almost finished. And i can say usd is popular in business here.

last 30 days 2 of my friends decided to stop working in Ukraine becouse of this crisis.

Hope all is going to be better soon. Im 32 years old and i saw 3 big crisis in my life so im sure its going to be over too, Everybody has to make sacrifice from his benefits. Employers, workers, students, babies etc.

Finally in 1932 there was a disaster of Golodomor in this country and lots of people died becouse  there were no foods !

I wish all Ukranians and all of you a Happy New Year and Merry Christmas.

Mariupol

It was early morning onSunday.Everybody was sleeping and we were on the way to Mariopol. The journey was long and tired. We were lost two three times even we had a GPS-Navigator :) We reached Mariopol in 11 hours.

It was a good city. Organised. There is a big port there. When i wasthere i thought there is Black Sea but i learned that Ukraine has two seas :) And Mariopol was near to Azov Sea.

The population of the city was around half million. We stayed ina flat it was two rooms and we paid around 80 usd/night.

We could not find many restaurants around. We have been to restaurant Beliy Libid. It was ok. I ate mushroom soup it was perfect.

These are all from Mariupol or Mariopol. If you need more info pls go to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariupol.

Kharkov and Poltava

Yes last week i was on a trip. And i want to share my impressions about these cities.

Kharkov was a big city like Kiev but it looks like an industry city. There are lots of people there may be you can make more business there. Kharkov is on the East part of Ukraine thats why most people speaks Russian. There is a bazaar, big one especially for wholesale trade its called BARABASOVA. i was lost in this bazar becouse its really huge.It was an international bazar you can see different people here from around the world.

I have rented a flat there. For one night i paid 700 hrv (119 usd) it was two rooms and a quite big one.The prices are like in Kiev. There was a Turkish Coffee there which we could not find :)

I can say there are lots of students in this city.So this city is good for education and business.

Than i have been to Poltava. It is a small and nice city. You can see lots of people selling fruits, vegetables on the road. I spent a day in Poltava than back to Kiev.

Do you know when i came back to Kiev I feel like i am at my own home town. Interesting Isnt It?

Im back to Kiev.

First of please accept my appoligize. I was on holiday on September but i had some problems in my work and i have to take new decissions. I jump to another job. And thats why i was busy with all these things. i could not write becouse of this.

But in this new season (Kiev Notes Episode 2 :) This blog is going to be more and more active and updated.

So lets start.

Kiev is quiet nowadays becouse its autumn everywhere is full of yellow leafs. The weather is getting colder and colder. The heating is central system here. So if the goverment doesnt think its cold enough they dont activate heating :(  I hope next week the heaters are going to work.

Two Opposite Mentality.

Today i want to write about two opposite views. Normally i dont like visiting museums but in winter you dont have more choice in this cold country and i visited Kiev War Museum. In this museum you can see uniforms, weapons. documents etc. belong to Ukranian forces from the 2.nd World War.
It was a really big museum. You can leave your coats to the vestiary and than start your tour more comfortably. I dont remember exactly but the entrance ticket must be less than 2 usd.
I saw a rest of a plane after crash, guillotine and lots of other staff. But i saw something which i could not imagine.
- A glove made of human leather I know it doesnt sound good but its the reality.I could not look it up. I felt strange when i saw it but how can a human made this to another human? And what can be the reason? And what did he feel after this? Who wears this?

Second item which makes me more strange ( sorry i cant explain my feelings well) is a soap. But this soap was made of a human too. Hitler made it. I heard similar things but in the past i did nt see. You feel different when you saw. How can you make it? How did they scream? What kind of a feeling is that? Cant imagine? I think these people cant be human, even cant be animals. What kind of a feeling like this? I cant understand.  When you take the peoples humanity feelings it became worst than animals. We saw it in the history. Hope in the future we wont see something like this. We will leave a peacefull world for our children.

The opposite of above things there was an International Organisation name 6.Turkish Olimpics. In this olimpics from more than 100 countries children came to Turkey and compete, cooparate, enjoy, sing, play with friends who comes from Ukraine, south Africa,Brazil,Bosnia,Papua New Gine,Gana or Mozambik....+100 countries. Can you imagine this? This was the global world. It was a good picture for the future. For videos pls check http://www.youtube.com/turkceolimpiyatlari

Today i want to write you about a famous Ukranian Pioneer. He is  Igor I. Sikorsky (1889-1972) Born in Kiev. Helped shape the development of Russian and American aviation. His greatest aeronautical achievements were his multi-motored airplanes, large flying boats and helicopters. Through innovative designs he set numerous aviation world records. Top 55 cities in Ukraine 2008

Ukrainians tend to change their residence in search of better life. People from regions come in Kyiv for higher wages, while residents of Kyiv, on the contrary, rent out their flats and move to the provinces to have quiet life. So what are the most desirable cities for Ukrainians?

It the second time Focus in Ukraine makes the analysis of life conditions in 55 biggest Ukrainian cities using more than 10 characteristics.

According to the analysis, the best city of Ukraine is Chernivtsi, which was one of the 5 best last year, then Kyiv and Yalta.

What is interesting the top 10 is presented mainly by the western cities while the eastern industrial centres were thrown to the end of the list: Dnipropertovsk (44), Donetsk (45), Kharkiv (50) and the 55th place is occupied by Zaporizhzhya.

There were also the winners in separate nominations:

Kyiv – as in the previous rating – is the most attractive city for investors and tourists. The capital has the smallest unemployment rate and the highest wages. The residents of Kyiv get state financing more than any other in Ukraine. It is not surprisingly that Kyiv has the highest migration increase.

Kerch became the leader in infrastructure.

Chernihiv got the title of the most ecologically clean city.

Kolomya has got the lowest crime level.

1. Chernivtsi

2. Kyiv

3. Yalta

4. Chernihiv

5. Ivano-Frankivsk

6. Mukachevo

7. Truskavets

8. Illichivsk

9. Lviv

10. Lutsk

The cities were analyzed according to the infrastructure (kindergartens, schools, hospitals, supermarkets and markets), also considering the level services and utilities, ecology, crime, unemployment, investment and tourist attractiveness.

The social aspect of analysis included the average salary, municipal services, average price for sq m, which characterizes the affordability of habitation, the number of high education institutions of III and IV accreditation levels, also the number of theatres and cinemas, houses and palaces of culture, the records of architecture, history and archeology and cultural areas.

The research also included business capacities of the cities – the number of enterprises and private entrepreneurs, the level of banking services, financing from the city authorities and migration processes.

It was late evening. I have to go to the market and buy some needings. But my son wants to come with me. He was at home all day he bored and wanted to come out with me. I said ok. The supermarket was 10 mins.away by bus.
Everything was normal we completed shopping and what a pity i bought more than i can carry :) i have to go home by bus 2 big bags + my 3 years old son. Oh my god !

Any way i didnt want to give chance to cabs to rob me and walked till bus stop. I was very tired so my son too. He was trying to walk alone, helping me etc etc.

At least our bus came but full of passengers :( so we waited for the next one.

Next one was full too i cant get on with two bags and a child.

than the third one came after 15 mins. it was full two i didnt know what to do but some Miracle happened!!!

Some one was calling me inside of the bus by hands. She was the conductor(people who sells tickets in the bus) She left her seat for me and my son (normally you cant sit their seats)she helped me for the bags.Everybody was looking at us.

She was helping me like an angel. Than we came to our stop she again helped me for bags for my son. Everyhing was okey. We come to home easier and faster than i expect.

I gave my thanks to her. Also to the God.

May be this is something routin for her but for me it was a big favor.

So she helped me from heart and i wish god will bless her.

I will try to do my best for everybody no classifications to everybody...

Russian and Kiev Tour.

Zdrastvuyte !

It means Hello in Russian :) I started to practice it but i can say Russian is one of the most diffucult language. Becouse it has lots of words to memorise and it has diffucult rules. But in Russian you can explain better what you want to tell you can use the suitable word for your position.

In Ukraine official language is Ukranian but most people speaks both.So if you speak Russian you can survive :)

I want to share a youtube video with you. Hope you will like it...

17 bank robberies for the previous 6 months

For the previous 6 months there were 17 bank robberies in Ukraine, 7 of them detected, said deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Volodymyr Yevdokymov at the press conference in Kyiv.

Moreover he said that for the years of independence there were 164 bank robberies where 7 officers and 11 cash messengers were injured.

According to Yevdokymov, one of the main reasons of robberies in the banking branches is the unsatisfactory level of the security and technical equipment.

Time Line History of Kiev

  • 482 Archaeologists tell that there were people living in the Kiev area as far back as 20,000 years ago. According to the chronicles the city was founded in 482 by the brothers Kiy, Schchek, Khoriv and their sister Lybed. The city name came from the eldest brother Kiy. The successors of Kiy were in control of the city until the 9th century.

  • 860 Military campaign by Prince Askold of Kiev against Byzantium, Christening of Askold.

  • 882 882-912. The Varangian Prince Oleg arrived from Novgorad to rule and turn the city into a large state connected with the lands of Novgorod, after killing the rulers of the city, Askold and Dir. Olegs words about Kiev became proverbial "Here will be the mother of Rus cities." This was the beginning of the Kievan Rus' state which lasted until the year 1240 when the Mongols (Tatars) invaded. Oleg also was entrusted by Rurik to look after his son Igor (Ingvar) who became Olegs successor.

  • 912 Death of Prince Oleg. Chronicles tell of a legendary story that a profit told Oleg he would die from falling off his favourite horse. Oleg decided never to ride his prized horse again. When the horse died, Oleg laughed and stepped on the horses skull. A snake emerged from the skull and bit Oleg on the leg, killing him.

  • 945 Igor Rurikovich gets killed by the Drevlianians a tribe that inhabited the forests north west of the city. After the death of Igor Rurikovich, his wife Princess Olga takes rule from 945 to 969 as regent for her son Sviatoslav 1. Princess Olga was the first ruler to convert to Christianity. During the year 1036, the Pechenegs approached Kyiv itself, stopping just before the city ramparts. Yaroslav the Wise, was extremely distressed at seeing this enemy encampment just outside his great city. Knowing it would not be an easy task to rout the Pechenegs, it is said that he prayed to the Blessed Virgin Mary, promising her that he would build a church in her honour if he obtained victory in the difficult battle ahead. There was indeed a fierce battle for possession of the city of Kyiv but, though the military might of the Pechenegs was great, King Yaroslav inflicted a devastating blow upon the army of the Pechenegs and virtually drove them off Ukrainian soil.

  • 1037 After the war of the previous year, Yaroslav The Wise ordered the construction of the magnificent Cathedral of Saint Sophia on the spot where the decisive battle took place. He also ordered the construction of the metropolitan church, the Monastery of Saint George and the Convent of Saint Irene.

All about Kiev

Kyiv (also known as Kiev), a scenic city of close to 3 million people situated on the Dnipro River, is the bustling capital of Ukraine. Ancient Kievan Rus, which reached its greatest period of ascendancy during the 11th and 12th centuries, was a center of trade routes between the Baltic and the Mediterranean. The city of Kyiv and the power of Kievan Rus were destroyed in 1240 by Mongol invaders and the lands of Kievan Rus were divided into principalities located to the west and north: Galicia, Volynia, Muscovy and later, Poland, Lithuania, and Russia. Once a powerful force on the European scene, Ukraine's fate in modern times has been decided in far-off capitals. As a result, modern Ukrainian history, for the most part, has been defined by foreign occupation.

Kyiv suffered severely during World War II, and many irreplaceable architectural and art treasures were destroyed. Earlier in the 1930's the Soviet authorities systematically destroyed many churches. Extensive restoration has revived much of historic Kyiv. The city hit the headlines in April 1986, when the nuclear reactor at nearby Chernobyl exploded, but scientists generally agree that the city is now safe from radiation effects.

Despite repressions, suffering, political turmoil, and ecological disasters, Ukraine's spirit and national identity have never died. On August 24, 1991, after the aborted coup in Moscow, Ukraine proclaimed its independence. As of 1994, Ukraine has diplomatic relations with over 135 countries and close to 60 diplomatic missions are established in Kyiv. News correspondents, business representatives, and students from all over the world reside in Kyiv, and the flow of foreign tourists and official delegations is heavy year round. The resident American community consists of Embassy personnel (including dependents), correspondents, business representatives, clergy, professors, and students.

The art and architecture of Kyiv are world treasures. The Cathedral of St. Sophia, where the princes of Kyiv were crowned in the years of Kyiv's grandeur, has outstanding mosaics and frescoes dating back to the 11th century. Overlooking the old section of Kyiv, Podol, stands the Ukrainian Baroque church of St. Andrew, much beloved by Ukrainians. The Percherska Lavra, the Monastery of the Caves, a short trolley ride from the center of town, has two 11th-century cathedrals on its grounds, in addition to its world-famous catacombs, bell tower, and museum collections. Close to the center of town stands the Golden Gate, a structure which dates back to 1037. This recently reconstructed remains of the former fortified wall of the city defined the limits of the city in centuries past. Several blocks away, stands the magnificent 19th-century Cathedral of St. Volodymyr.

Theater buffs will find much to choose from here. Most performances are in Ukrainian or Russian. The recently renovated Kyiv Opera House presents very good opera as well as a broad repertoire of ballets. The Kyiv Young Theater is very popular and stages innovative plays in Ukrainian or Russian. The Ivan Franko Theater is the center of Ukrainian drama, comedy, and musicals. This repertoire has just opened its 75th season and includes brilliant versions of Aeneid and Teve Tevel, the original version of Fiddler on the Roof.

The modern center with surviving parts of the old city are on the hilly west, or right bank, of the Dnipro River. The main street, Khreshchatik, runs between two steep hills. Parallel about half a kilometer west, is vulytsya Volodymyrska, the main street of the Old Kyiv area (Staryj Kyiv). From the north end of Khreshchatik, vulytsya Hrushevskoho rises southeast along a ridge to the Caves Monastery at Perchersk. Woods and parks cover most of the steep right-bank slopes. The capital's newer sections stretch out on the flat left bank. These are characterized by large housing developments and industrialized neighborhoods.

Ukrainian pottery, embroidery, and handicrafts are available throughout the city, particularly in shops on Andrievsky Uzviz, at Percherska Lavra, and St. Sophia's church. Quality and quantity vary from shop to shop. A growing number of hard currency stores stock Western food, alcohol, clothing, and electrical appliances. Most prices, in hard-currency stores, are higher than those in the West, and availability of stock is unpredictable.

Oops! There seem to be more pickpockets lately out there. Ignore tricksters claiming you've dropped some money, trying to make you take out your wallet. Some, though dressed normally, will show you a fake police ID and demand to check your documents - do not show them anything and try to walk away or call someone on your phone. Ladies, watch your bags closely in crowded places - even in cafes and restaurants - have your belongings always in sight.
